Jardín de Aranjuez
Do you like the Concierto de Aranjuez? Here is our re-composition of Joaquín Rodrigo’s famous piece, and this is the story behind it…
Some time ago, I read that Rodrigo was inspired by the gardens at the royal palace of Aranjuez when he wrote his famous Concierto de Aranjuez. He chose these natural themes because they were unlikely to be censored by Franco’s regime.
Pierre and I visited the garden last year, but we felt that its natural beauty just wasn’t brought to light in Rodrigo’s composition the way we imagined it could be. Even Miles Davis’s version was, in our view, not doing it; it’s a beautiful version, but it’s more evocative of a certain idea of Spain than of the gardens of Aranjuez.
Then, if you consider that Rodrigo wrote the piece for guitar, but that he was himself a pianist, you can start to see why we felt this might be a great piece for us to re-write. So, this is our re-composition, evoking the birds, bees and butterflies we were marvelled by in the actual garden of Aranjuez.
