Je me souviens de Monsieur Lai

Last summer, we spent a long time studying the beautiful work of Francis Lai.

I only knew him by name, with a couple of obvious melodies that everyone knows, from movies like Bilitis and Love Story.

It turned out he had a very big influence on French TV and cinema. Thanks to his music, a lot of people still feel very nostalgic about the memories they have of childhood, growing up in this beautiful country. Every day, the France 2 TV channel used to open and close their programming with a melody he wrote!

This piece is based on a very short melody of his that is played in the film "Le Corps de mon Ennemi", starring Jean-Paul Belmondo. The film is about a marriage, and one of my friends was getting married over the summer, so we re-wrote it as something you could dance a waltz to.
